Web Tip Wednesday: Use All the Fields

Everywhere on the web, hidden fields exist that the consumer never sees. These fields are perfect for search engine optimization. Humans don’t want to read keyword laden stuff, they want real content. However, getting it in front of them is the name of the game this week.

A field is anything that can be filled in. Some fields the general public sees, most they do not. For example, to post a blog on a website, one fills in the title, text, and photo. These are the things people see. There are also alternative text fields, categories, and other subtle things to fill in.

On a blog post, it is important to check the photo for extra fields. In particular, most photo uploads include an alt text (short for alternative text) field. Accessibility devices for the hard of sight read this field, but it can also be a good place to sneak in a keyword or five. Some people swear this is the secret to rising up the search engine ranks.

Social media also uses fields apart from the caption. For example, Facebook has an alternative text field. Facebook recommends a 100-character limit in there, but it doesn’t enforce the limit. Instagram doesn’t offer alternative text right now, but it does offer a location field which has been shown to increase visibility. Twitter requires digging through a couple menus to do. These are examples, there are always more being added to different social media platforms.

Using all the fields provides a boost to a webpage’s SEO score without sticking keywords where real humans might be annoyed with them. This allows the content to shine, and the visiting consumers to have a solid, trust-building experience. That trust can then become a business relationship, which leads to the end goal of gaining clients.
