Web Tip Wednesday: Domain Name Power

In an online space, especially one as populated as the current one, brand recognition is a key to success. The thing about brand recognition though is that it is not always colors and styles. Sometimes brand recognition can come from something as simple as a consistent domain name.

Now, it can be easy to overthink a domain name for a website. In the pursuit of smart, cheeky, and memorable, many come up with something that has nothing to do with their businesses. This hampers recognition and makes remembering the web address more difficult. Even that extra second of hesitation, it can affect customer loyalty.

Now, when picking a domain name, one also must figure in the expanded web-verse. No longer do businesses only exist in their own websites. Instead, they exist across the numerous platforms that fit under the name social media as well. Creating a name that can be used across all the platforms has large benefits.

Social media platforms all have different handle length requirements. At the time of this post, Twitter has the most restrictive character limits. This can make matching handles across social media platforms to a web domain challenging to say the least. Careful consideration must occur prior to setting these up.

Using the same name across platforms makes it easier for consumers to find all the channels they can follow through. It really helps with brand consistency too, and there’s a certain amount of trust in it. Potential customers may need to be around for a little bit before they trust enough to buy. The more channels they can follow to foster trust over time, the better. When it’s all said and done, it definitely pays to make it easy for consumers to find the business everywhere.
