After setting up a website, the default is to list out qualifications and statistics in the about me section of any website. While that works for larger companies, for a smaller company it’s unnecessary clutter. It also gives up one of the best ways to build a connection with the consumer.
Writing an about me section is never easy. Most people consider it a delicate balance between appearing qualified and sounding pompous. Some people find it hard due to self-consciousness. How many of those sections sound like an unachievable fairy tale? Well, it’s time to change that narrative.
About me sections for a solopreneur or small business should be a story. Rather than display a
highlight real, it should be something people can connect to. That means vulnerability and following a plot to where the business is today. It means around three transitions and keeping on track. The story also means making it readable too.
Now, having a story written into the about me section does not mean every detail of life needs including. Think of it more like the big plot points that are comfortable to share. Those plot points should be the transitions in life that brought about the business. These are usually relatable things to the reader and show humanity too.
That humanity is what forms the connection between the business and the audience. The about me page has a lot of power to facilitate human connection rather than being a list of laurels. That kind of connection builds loyalty. In time, loyalty leads to trust. To paraphrase Zig Ziglar, people who trust will buy. Buying starts a chain reaction whereupon a business can help even more people through their work.
