There’s more to theme than the thing loaded into the website. Every piece of public information forms a theme for a business, whether it’s intentional or not. Consciously choosing these items makes for a more cohesive and professional result.
There are some simpler things to manage. Using the same fonts wherever possible is one of the easiest things to do. Choosing and sticking to a color palette when you make your own graphics helps too. It’s not all so clean cut though.
Logos are one of the most commonly recognized pieces of a business. They are not, however, the only imagery associated with a business. There are the people associated with the business, such as the owner who starts it all. Their story offers a powerful counterpoint to the business.
Another possibility is to pick an object or animal. These items just keep turning up in regular copy and on social media. They usually have some significance in the story of the business. For example, an entrepreneur aiming for a beachy, relaxed theme might choose pineapple as an emissary object.
Now it’s all fine and dandy to pick out theme elements at the beginning. They may even seem perfect for the business. However, people and businesses grow. This may mean theme items need to change, and usually, when humans want change they want it at once.
Instead, it’s best to tap the brakes on change a bit. Announce it to people and give them a little notice. Sometimes that mystery is good for engagement, particularly on social media. Once people are comfortable, or even notified, then the change can roll out. Businesses keep more engagement when change doesn’t just appear on them.
Cohesive theming has many benefits. It helps customers recognize the business across different social media platforms. Theming also shows that the business has it together and professional. It takes a little time to do, but the results speak for themselves.
