It’s easy to say you’re going to start a side hustle or online business. However, the process of getting started often stalls out. People end up overwhelmed in all the options and regulations. Often, they just stop.
Pick a Plan
Everything from graphic design to writing to secretarial work happens online these days. Step one is to pick one of these things to focus on. Since I’m a writer, that’s the option I’ll be using in the rest of this post.
There are a lot of options for writers online. There are remote positions from companies that offer traditional benefits. Then there are content mills, where people claim jobs that interest them off a board. The most lucrative though are usually contract positions obtained through pitching. There’s even the possibility of teaching others how to write.
With so many options, it’s important to pick just one course of action when you’re getting started. If you try to choose more than one, your time and effort disperse, and you won’t get the same results. It’s also important to stick with a plan for more than a week.
Set Goals and Milestones
The only way to truly measure how effective a course of action is to set milestones to measure by. Establishing these realistic milestones lets you know when it’s time to change plans or if the current plan is working well.
The first step is to set up goals. Knowing how much you want to make each month is a good start. Make sure your goals include time to learn each new system you take on. For example, getting started on a new content mill means learning that mill’s standards, which can slow down your writing for a time.
Milestones are the stepping stones to broader goals. For example, consistently making a certain amount per day is a milestone, even though it may not be enough to fill that month’s financial goal. It’s important to celebrate these milestones, especially if you’re working alone.
Do Something
One of the biggest missteps people make when getting into online work is not starting. They believe they must learn more, take the next course, understand everything, etc. before they even begin. That’s just not the case.
If you’re uncertain, you can still start. For a writer, content mills may not pay a lot, but you will learn how to quickly practice your craft to meet deadlines. It’s also a more structured environment. Over time, it’s a real confidence boost towards moving into better-paid writing forms.
The biggest thing getting started as a writer is to do something. The doing raises your confidence, and before you know it, you’ll be moving towards larger goals.
Parting Thoughts
Getting started online can be an intimidating possibility. However, choosing a plan, setting goals, and doing something make it a lot more manageable. Once you start, it’s easier to work your way up with confidence.
