Plan It Like You Mean It

Being the head of a business requires taking on many different roles, especially for a solopreneur. Everything from marketing to sales to delivering rests on one person’s shoulders. That means the time to do all of this becomes exceedingly valuable.

Since time is the most valuable resource, scheduling becomes a method to preserve it and maximize its potential. Knowing what needs doing each week to make it to the big goal is necessary and really prevents distraction. In my case, the first weekend of every month has a block of time in it so I can plot the rest of the month.

Nothing is too small to escape scheduling. I write out when I want blogs written, social media published, pitches sent, billing done, everything. Sometimes it starts on some good old-fashioned paper as a list, but most of the time I’ll use a visual organization app such as Trello* or Asana*.

After I’ve figured out by when everything needs to happen, it’s time to find the time to do it. A task list is great but knowing how long each item will take is also essential for planning. For example, I know I can write out a blog post in a little over half an hour and that I’m putting out two blogs a week on my site. Therefore, I need to schedule an hour somewhere just to write.

With these times in mind, I can put together week by week plans at the start of the month. That way I’m not spending time trying to figure out what to do when I could be knocking items out. I also do my topic brain dumps during this organization time so I’m not on the spot when it’s time to write.

The organization is key to getting all the things done, and personal knowledge plays a huge roll in it. It’s important to plan for the best results available. This doesn’t just extend to the day to day, it also includes for launches and special events. Taking a little time plan makes everything more efficient and will show in the business profits.
