SEO is a critical component of marketing and part of the broader strategy. Yet, if you’re looking around the internet, you may notice an absence of discussions about SEO and how to implement it correctly for results in 2024.

The Short Version: What is SEO?

SEO is the shorthand for search engine optimization. SEO encompasses both things you do on your website and the strategies you use off of it to establish authority, teach the search engines what you’re about, or help people find your company.

The Impact of SEO on Business

First, SEO is a long-term plan, not a fast fix. It can take six to twelve months to gain traction using SEO, but once your company starts gaining traction, it tends to keep that momentum. However, the lead time involved can make it a challenging strategy to start.

The big benefit of SEO is organic traffic, i.e., you don’t have to pay for it. Over time, that adds up to a lot of savings on paid advertising. The keys, however, are time and strategy. Otherwise, you miss too many customers.

Another thing SEO impacts is your authority, both to the algorithm and the public. Good SEO helps you gain authority according to the various search engine algorithms. However, more importantly, people search your company before they do business with you. If they can’t find you, chances are they find your competition.

Why SEO Shifts but Will Not Go Away in 2024

While SEO may seem like a hindrance, problem, or barrier to doing business, it’s not going away. At this point, it’s baked into the search engine system and how society operates.

However, there will still be changes. The algorithm has been shifted in small and large ways to combat gaming it. For example, keyword stuffing used to be the fastest way to the top of the search engine results list. Now, it’s the fastest way to the bottom.

While secret, the algorithms used by the search engines are not a complete mystery. The factors have changed over time, as has their weight. At last count, there were over 200 factors in the Google algorithm and a similar number in the others.

How SEO Will Change in 2024

Now, SEO may not be going away, but it is evolving. While the changes are rarely announced, you can expect more AI integration. Artificial intelligence lets the algorithm accurately process even more factors, like images and audio. That means more of your content will count.

Also, on the topic of AI, you should also expect content quality to become more critical. Unfortunately, AI can be used to produce a lot of content, but it’s probably not as high quality. This difference will become significant.
