Web Tip Wednesday: Have a Website

A website used to be optional. Then the internet exploded into every single facet of the human experience. Whether the customer is looking on a tablet, cell phone, or computer, one of the first things most people do is search your business. Then it usually goes one of two ways.

The first option is that nothing comes up, or that another business does. The consumer can’t find your business! Then they conclude your business does not actually exist, either because it’s a scam or it closed. Not what you want, right?

The second option is that your website pops up to the top of the search results along with your social media profiles. The customer has your location, hours, website, and all the information they could ever want right at their fingertips. Certainly sounds more appealing, yes?

The website serves as a base for your business. It gives you a platform that’s not subject to unannounced changes, unlike social media. It also provides a better picture of your business, since you have control over all the colors, fonts, pictures, and web links. That kind of control can be priceless to businesses.

Initially, setting up a website can be daunting. There are options where you contract someone to do the work. There are also several do it yourself options available. Generally, buying a domain name that suits your business is the first step. The goal is to pick a domain name that helps your customer find you.

The other part of putting up a site is picking hosting service, which stores the data for your website. Some of the do it yourself options offer hosting as part of the package. Others require the procurement of a separate service before the website can be on the web. Generally, these try to be as unobtrusive as possible and easy to use.

Bottom line, if your business is not on the web, get there! It’s getting to the point where the web has as much power to spread your business and influence its success as word of mouth. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither will your stellar website be. Starting that road though is incredibly necessary to reach today’s customers.
