There are many places to start but starting with the business seems natural. After all, that’s the site you’re currently on or the social media equivalent.
I started this business, this year. Yep, 2018 start date. Thing is, I’ve been writing for other people all my life. Everyone writes for high school and university. I wrote beyond the classes, and I enjoy it, especially when I was writing for a newswire.
So, I’m going for it.
There are a lot of moving pieces to start a business, and at times it’s rather overwhelming. It’s also sometimes difficult to determine what must happen now versus what can wait a little bit. I chose to sort out my legal bits first, because there are a lot of horror stories on the web, and I did not want to be one of them.
One of the recurring pieces of advice I chose to follow is to set up separate financials in different bank accounts. To do that, I had to have an EIN. EINs are issued by the Internal Revenue Service, and that means I had to form a basic legal entity. Talk about scary amounts of paperwork. I ended up using a service.
The next step was to figure out what I wanted to do. I had the basic idea of writing (otherwise you wouldn’t be on a site called Silver Magpie Writing Services LLC!) but picking exactly which parts of writing I wanted to specialize and who I wanted to work with was a challenge. If you’ve never looked up how many types of writing there are, it’s a huge number.
I went through a whole process someone else developed to narrow it down. It involved a lot of looking inside myself and at exactly what I wanted to do. It also involved looking at who I wanted to work with. In the end, I came out with the services I offer and a desire to work with small business owners.
Long story short, starting is scary. Starting has a lot of complications. Starting is also necessary if a dream is to be something other than a dream.
